The Ultimate Travel Packing Checklist
Packing’s a guess-and-hope game—stuff gets forgotten, bags tip over the limit, and the carry-on rules blur right when you’re zipping up.
Cue airport counter shock (eye-watering excess fees), security delays for liquids over 100 ml in one 1-litre bag, and a hard 32 kg cap that no airline will lift. Add the panic of missing meds, chargers, or travel docs and your trip starts stressed
Use this pre-travel checklist to plan, weigh, organise and keep your wallet—and sanity—intact.
Packing mindset: pack light, pack smart
Build a small capsule wardrobe in quick-dry, layerable pieces. Plan to do laundry mid-trip, aim for items you’ll wear at least twice, and cut anything “just in case.” Target carry-on only if possible.
Documents & money (carry-on only)
- Passport/ID (6+ months validity) & required visas/ETAs
- Travel insurance policy + emergency numbers
- Main credit/debit card + backup card; small local cash
- Copies of key docs (paper + cloud backup)
- Emergency contacts & medical info
- Itinerary, bookings, and boarding passes (offline-ready)
Bags & organisation
- Right bag for the trip: suitcase or backpack sized to your allowance
- Personal item setup (under-seat daypack with essentials)
- Packing cubes or garment folders for order and compression
- Locks, name tags, and a tracker (AirTag/Tile)
- Luggage ID (bright strap/label) and rain cover for backpacks
Clothing (core list + how to adapt)
- Tops/Bottoms: ~5–6 tops : 2–3 bottoms for a week (mix & match, quick-dry).
- Underwear/Socks: 5–7 pairs; add merino for odour control.
- Outer layer: Lightweight jacket or rain shell; add insulated layer for cold trips.
- Footwear plan: Walking shoes + dressier option; add weather footwear (sandals/rain boots) as needed.
- Swimwear & accessories: Swimsuit, hat, scarf, belt, compact umbrella.
- Research first: Check destination weather & dress norms; adjust layers and fabrics accordingly.
Toiletries & personal care
Decant your liquids into ≤100 ml travel bottles and keep them together in a 1-litre clear resealable bag to meet TSA and most international rules.
Essentials include a toothbrush and paste, deodorant, basic skincare, SPF, and lip balm. For grooming, bring a razor, a small brush or comb, and compact hair tools if needed.
To avoid leaks, tighten caps, tape lids, and pack liquids in zip bags, upright where possible. Optional extras like a quick-dry travel towel, mini laundry soap, or a small nail kit can add convenience without taking up much space.
Health & meds
Pack prescriptions in their original packaging with scripts and keep them in your carry-on. Bring a small first-aid kit with pain relief, plasters, antiseptic and blister care, plus situational medicines like motion-sickness, altitude and cold/flu tablets.
Include hygiene essentials such as hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and tissues. Finally, check any vaccine or entry health requirements for your destination and carry proof if required.
Electronics & power
Keep tech simple and flight-ready. Prioritise battery life, universal charging, and offline access so you’re covered even without Wi-Fi.
- Essentials: Phone, laptop/tablet (if needed), headphones/earbuds.
- Power: Chargers for each device, compact power bank (carry-on only), universal travel adaptor; consider an eSIM or roaming plan.
- Storage: Camera (optional) with spare SD card; cloud or drive backup for photos/docs.
- Organisation: Cable pouch with short leads (USB-C/Lightning/micro-USB) and a small multi-port charger.
Final Checks
Before you zip up, do one calm final sweep so you start the trip relaxed and fee-free.
Weigh and measure your bags, confirm you’ve got only permitted items in carry-on, and keep essentials easy to grab.
Leave a little space for souvenirs, and make sure your documents and offline backups are ready. Then you’re set.
- Weigh & size: Under your allowance; no single bag over 32 kg.
- Rules check: Liquids ≤100 ml in one 1-litre bag; no prohibited items.
- Essentials on top: Passport/ID, meds, chargers, headphones.
- Photo your layout: Snap your packed setup for an easy repack later.
- Leave wiggle room: A bit of spare space for the trip home.
